The Role


The Assistant Supervisor reports directly to the Site Supervisor, Director of Human Resources and Campus Administrator. They will assist in providing leadership, overall management, and strategic operations according to the direction and policies set by VMA. The Assistant Supervisor works closely with the Site Supervisor and all employees at the Franklin Horner Campus in ensuring the delivery of high quality Early Years programs.

The role will be split with duties completed in both an office and classroom setting. The Assistant Supervisor will be considered part of a classroom's ratios during their classroom duties.

What You'll Do

Leadership Duties

  • Assist the Site Supervisor by collaborating with all employees, licensing bodies, and community agencies to meet and support the mission and vision of VMA
  • Encourage team-building by modelling open communication and positive working relationships with employees and families
  • Assist the Site Supervisor in ensuring VMA complies with requirements from licensing bodies and provincial regulations, including but not limited to: CCEYA, Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health & Safety, Human Rights, Toronto Public Health, and Toronto Children's Services

Human Resource Management


  • Assist the Director of Human Resources and Administrator in creating a staffing schedule including managing requests for time off, absences, and vacations. Ensures sufficient staffing of the Campus at all times to meet the student-to-teacher ratio requirements under the CCEYA.
  • Oversee management of employees in the absence of the Site Supervisor
  • Follow all policies and procedures and make recommendations for policy review when necessary
  • Provide input in the hiring and promotion of employees
  • Provide input into employee performance reviews
  • Assist the Site Supervisor in ensuring that all employees have signed off on policies and required documents, and employee files are kept up-to-date
  • Inform the Site Supervisor of any employee issues and concerns
  • Assist in the training and onboarding of new employees
  • Assist with coaching, managing performance and mentoring employees. Be a consultant for employees in program development and implementation.
  • Assist in ensuring employees are aware of any new legislative requirements and that the appropriate training is provided

Program Management

  • Assist the Site Supervisor in ensuring a high-quality Early Years program is being delivered to meet the cognitive, social, emotional, and physical needs of students
  • Provide coverage for employees in their classrooms to allow for programming, preperatory time and meetings
  • Ensure compliance with all VMA policies and procedures and requirements of legislative and licensing bodies

Operational, Financial & Administrative Management

  • Purchase supplies, equipment, and inventory for VMA
  • Assist in day-to-day operations as delegated by the Site Supervisor.
  • Address any issues and ensure timely repairs of all equipment and furniture
  • Comply with all budgets as directed by the Site Supervisor, Director of Human Resources and Administrator
  • Assist with financial administration and record keeping as delegated by the Site Supervisor. Ensure all purchasing invoices and receipts are categorized and submitted to accounting in a timely manner.
  • Assist with maintaining records of each student enrolled in the program, including registration forms, medical records, permission forms, and consent forms
  • Assist with ensuring accurate, complete, and confidential maintenance of employee and client records

Family & Community Relations

  • Develop positive relationships and collaborative partnerships with families. Maintain professional boundaries and constant awareness of the “client” relationship with families.
  • Support employees in developing positive relationships with families
  • Assist the Site Supervisor in encouraging family involvement at VMA throughout the program, social activities, and social inclusion
  • Act as a resource to families in matters related to their children and VMA
  • Ensure the program and employees reflect the mission and vision of VMA. Act as a role model and resource for employees working in the classroom
  • Be a mentor and resource for information for families regarding the Early Childhood Education profession
  • Participate in networking and community activities on behalf of VMA

What You'll Need

  • A Degree or Diploma in Early Childhood Education, or equivalent. Preference will be given to applicants with a Degree.
  • Registration to the College of Early Childhood Educators and in Good Standing
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as an RECE in a licensed child care setting
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience as an RECE in a Toddler classroom (18 months-2.5 years) and 1 year of experience as an RECE in a Pre-Kindergarten classroom (2.5-4 years)
  • Fundamental knowledge and application of the Assessment for Quality Improvement (AQI) for both Toddler and Pre-Kindergarten age groups. The candidate will have a minimum of 2 previous AQI evaluations where above city average scores were obtained.
  • Demonstrated experience in identifying areas of the program that do not exceed expectations of the AQI evaluation and ablility to train new employees to become compliant with the AQI for both age groupings
  • Thorough experience of utilizing the Reggio-Emilia teaching philosophy in Toddler and Pre-Kindergarten classrooms. Ability to act as a resource for classrooms on how Reggio can be further developed in their classroom.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, capable of creating respectful, professional and empowering relationships with employees to build cohesive teams
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution and team building skills
  • Excellent reading and writing skills
  • Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams
  • Excellent organization skills with an ability to meet deadlines and prioritze tasks
  • Experience working with special needs children and collaborating with families and resource consultants to support a students IEP
  • Fundamental knowledge and application of the ELECT framework and How Does Learning Happen pedagogy
  • Fully immunized with a Health Canada-recognized COVID-19 vaccine
  • Current and clear Vulnerable Sector Check, or willing to receive one
  • Standard First Aid/CPR C certification
  • Available Monday-Friday between 7:00 am-6:00 pm
