Conservation Education AmeriCorps Member

Service Summary:

The Discover Your Forest Conservation Education partner will play an essential and active role in assisting Discover Your Forest and the U.S. Forest Service with several of our interpretive and conservation education programs.The AmeriCorps member will work with DYF educators and US Forest Service staff and volunteers.

The primary goal is to deliver place-based environmental education programs across the Deschutes National Forest at Mt. Bachelor, Lava Lands Visitor Center, Lava River Cave and Newberry Caldera. In addition, our AmeriCorps member will gain teaching experience in the classroom conducting pre and post field trip visits.

Approximately 70% of service time will be spent working as an instructor with students in the field and classroom, 20% of time in the office preparing field tip materials, assisting with curriculum development, researching natural resources for lesson background information, and 10% of time hosting Jr Snow Ranger programs. 90% of operations are on weekdays 10% of operations are on weekend days.

Duration

AmeriCorps members serve 1,700 hours over 11 months beginning September 1st, 2023 through July 26th 2024.

Stipend:

Notre Dame Mission Volunteers AmeriCorps members receive up to a $17,600 living allowance for the year distributed bi-weekly plus a Segal Educational Award of $7,395 upon completion of their year of service. Members are eligible for student loan forbearance during their term and Health Insurance Available through CIGNA. Service Members also receive on the job training, opportunities for career development, and additional training and support provided throughout the year.

Duties include but not limited to:

● Attendance at all NDMVA team meetings.

● Assist with in classroom environmental education lessons.

● Aid in the planning and implementation of winter and spring volunteer training events.

● Assist in development of environmental education lessons with a focus on conservation. ● Lead students on snowshoe Project SNOW programs at Mt. Bachelor.

● Lead students on Lava Lands and Lava River Cave field trips at Newberry National Volcanic Monument.

● Lead Jr Snow Ranger and Jr Forest Ranger 1 weekend day per month. ● Prepare field trip materials (copies, gear, lesson plans. ect.)

● Engage in training and ongoing learning related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and trauma-informed strategies, especially in the context of the outdoors.

● Implement strategies to ensure that all participants feel welcomed and included in programs.

● Upon interest and availability, assist in Forest Service interpretation programs. Qualified candidate will be/have:

● A commitment to the mission of Discover Your Forest and the U.S. Forest Service ● The ability to work independently and in a group setting

● Comfortable working with a wide range of ages (children and adults)

● Comfortable working outside during all seasons in varying weather conditions ● Professional verbal and written communication

● Openness to learning new information and skills

● Reliable transportation

Education Value
