What Are We Looking For?

Under the general supervision of the Supervisor Projects, the primary role of the Construction Planner is to work in partnership with local Regional Teams to expedite the construction of regional projects. Construction planners will complete site visits to finalize alignments, including field fitting designs, complete staking, construction reviews, landowner contacts, vegetation consents, and site readiness inspections for all regional and Direct-to-Construction (DTC) projects.

Construction Planners provide field technical expertise on overhead and underground electrical distribution systems to confirm customer load, voltage, and design requirements and evaluate project scope of work and construction requirements on site.

The Construction Planner will be responsible for reviewing project designs developed by regional crews and address all field conflicts, including obtaining approvals, reviewing construction methods, and ensuring site access and readiness. This position will coordinate with Area Foremen and Area Coordinators to ensure the efficient completion of customer-driven projects using available construction resources while seeking innovative ways to streamline timelines and deliver top quality projects safely, on time, and within budget.

This position plays a key role in engaging directly with FortisAlberta customers, and expected to provide excellent customer service, ensure effective communication between customers and FortisAlberta employees, and resolve any customer concerns. The Construction Planner position will also perform site Risk and Hazard Assessments, confirm land, environmental, and brushing concerns along with appropriate FortisAlberta departments, ensure standards and codes for distribution projects are adhered to, and provide technical guidance to customers, stakeholders, and external resources.

Other special projects and duties may be assigned.

Working knowledge of MS Outlook, SharePoint, Word, Excel & PowerPoint is required.
Learn and utilize tools, Trimble, GNET, SAP, CRM, PMT, Aba Data, SPIN
Learn and utilize Engineering standards and templates.
Understanding of project management principles and process would be an asset.
Knowledge of all applicable codes, acts, and regulations as they apply to the electric utility industry would be an asset.
Knowledge of Highway Traffic accommodation requirements would be an asset.
Knowledge of Land Survey Act would be an asset.
Working knowledge in SAP, CRM, PMT, ALD, GNet Viewer (AM/FM), Estimating and Design tools, Pipeline Research, SPIN (Survey Plan Indexing Network), Aba Data, Google Earth, as well as other related design programs would be an asset.
Staking and surveying skills would be an asset.

Qualifications we are looking for:
A Journeyman Power Line Technician certification, Electrical Engineering Technology diploma, Civil Engineering Technology diploma, or Geomatics Engineering Technology diploma plus a minimum of three (3) years of field experience is required.
A Civil or Mechanical Engineering Technology diploma with two (2) years of electrical industry experience would also be considered.
A valid Alberta Motor Vehicle (Class 5) driver's license in good standing is required.
Previous experience in a design specialist or planning-based position would be considered an asset.
Additional trade credentials, technical diplomas, or professional designations in related disciplines would be considered assets.

Special Conditions:
Due to geographic and training considerations, some travel, including overnight stays, is required.
