Job Summary
Carolina Gas Transmission has an exciting Gas Measurement Engineer position located at our Greystone office building in Columbia, SC. The position will be filled as Engineer I or Engineer II depending upon the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.
This Engineer I/II role is responsible for designing and supporting gas measurement, regulation, and control systems throughout the Carolina Gas Transmission operating area. This position needs strong critical thinking skills, technical abilities (including hands-on activities), and interpersonal/communication skills to be successful.
Job Responsibilities:
- Design gas measurement, regulation, and control systems to ensure accurate, efficient, reliable, safe, and compliant operations. Systems include but are not limited to meters, RTUs/EFMs, analyzers, regulators, control valves, and overpressure protection devices.
- Manage capital budget for system-wide gas measurement projects. Create time and cost estimates for new gas measurement, regulation, and control systems projects; create proposals and review bids for equipment and service contracts. Monitors spending on active projects and maintains within approved amounts.
- Create and manage changes for project construction and in-service schedules, ordering materials, and coordinating contractors and operations personnel.
- Develop and maintain minimum standards for fabricators and vendors to ensure access to quality equipment, fabrication, and integration services. Ensure adequate communications with stakeholders to minimize concerns regarding supply chain, pipeline integrity, measurement, safety, and regulatory.
- Provide technical and commissioning support for gas measurement, regulation, and control systems installations.
- Manage multiple issues, projects, and personnel over a large operating area.
- Support capital project development by performing capacity studies of existing facilities.
- Develop technical documentation, equipment specifications, training materials and installation and testing procedures for gas measurement, regulation, and control systems and operations.
- Develop and maintain a database of measurement and regulation facility costs to provide estimates for new facilities/projects.
- Develop and conduct training classes for gas measurement, regulation, and control systems and operations.
- Provide data and recommendations related to for gas measurement, regulation, and control systems and operations to leadership, operations, gas control, marketing, and other internal/external customers.
- Provide engineering support to technicians and other internal/external customers to promote quality measurement practices, fuel gas accountability, and reduce lost and unaccounted for (LAUF) gas.
- Perform capacity calculations for relief valves and regulators to ensure safe operations and compliance with federal regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
Engineer I:
0-2+ years of related engineering experience
Engineer II:
3+ years of related engineering experience
- Four-year accredited engineering degree (Engineer)
- Ability to monitor changes in technology with skill in developing, testing and recommending new ideas and strategies for the utilization of those changes
- Demonstrated ability to interpret engineering schematics, drawings, and technical manuals
- Demonstrated ability to prepare technical reports, project schedules, and cost estimates
- Ability to lead, work independently, communicate effectively, and establish rapport
- Ability to define problems, collect accurate data, draw valid conclusions, and develop solutions
- Demonstrated ability to effectively operate a personal computer and common software applications.
- Four-year degree in Civil, Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, or Petroleum Engineering
- Prior related engineering work experience in the natural gas industry
- Knowledge of applicable regulations and standards for the natural gas industry (e.g. AGA, API, DOT, NEC, FERC, OSHA, NFPA, etc.)
- Knowledge of company operations, policies and procedures
- Knowledge of electronic and pneumatic engineering principles, theory, and equipment
- Knowledge of gas measurement (RTU/flow computers, meters, transducers, chromatographs, and other gas quality equipment), regulation, control and overpressure protection theory and equipment
Education Requirements
For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met:
- Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET accredited engineering program based on the year that the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
- Possess a 4-year engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
- Possess a 4-year engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
- Possess a 4-year degree in Physics, Chemistry or Math and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
