Paralegal Assistant

Status: part-time/contract

Location: varies depending on circumstances (have access to a car)

Job Description:

As a Family Paralegal Personal Assistant, you will be responsible for maintaining and updating the legal records of the client, personal affairs assisting in the preparation and maintenance of family law cases records (high conflict case). Seek evidence to create a case and build a case for the court (7 years worth). Accurate record-keeping for future referencing.

You will be required to update schedules and financial files, read and summarize e-mails, give reminders and prompts to the client and if you are required. A high level in problem solving and simplify issues or documentations before bringing it forward.

We are looking for a person that can work in a fast-paced environment, that is great communicating and working with a team and on your own. You will need to be proactive and have a great attention to detail.

Job Requirements

Education:

-Law Clerk Diploma, or other legal education/training equivalent

-Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario Certificate

-Post-secondary degree/diploma in the legal field or equivalent

Experience:

-7-10 years of experience as a law clerk, legal assistant or related legal services.

-Have much experience with Family Law

-have experience with parental alienation

-have familiarity with section 30 and building a case for parental and family alienation

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

-Writes clearly and concisely in various communication settings and styles. Can get message across to desired effect (written and verbal). Practices attentive and active listening. Follows instructions and guidelines
-Do legal research on legal platforms and other platforms and analyze as required in any situation as needed.
- Can prepare legal documentation accurately, paying attention to detail and managing workload in deadline-oriented environment
-Ability to co-ordinate efforts with lawyer and other related professionals in efficient, effective, and timely manner.

Is dedicated to meeting expectations and requirements of scheduled items. Establishes and maintains effective relationships with lawyers and other related professional gaining their trust and respect.

-Is personally committed to and actively works to continuously improve. Adjusts approach dependent on different situations and audiences. Intuitive on the need to change personal and interpersonal behaviour. Seeks feedback. Works on compensating where improvement needed. Receptive to and acts on constructive feedback

-Proven analytical and problem-solving skills with experience simplifying and resolving complex problems

-Superior organizational and time management skills with experience handling multiple priorities

-Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong grammar, and exceptional spelling, proofreading abilities and attention to detail

-Able to be flexible, and adapt easily to change

Duties:

  • Performs and/or supports legal secretarial activities relating to all family legal entities including minute books, resolutions, directors and officers, authorized signatories and powers of attorney
  • Maintains and/or supports database for personal documents
  • Performs and/or supports drafting/reviewing legal documents including contracts, reports and filings, pleadings, motion records, trial records, Statements of Issues and more
  • Advising the client on escalated matters and other legal disputes
  • Scheduling and prompting the client of any outstanding issues or deadlines approach ahead of time and draft and correspond in representation of the client
  • Conduct Quicklaw research regarding injury valuations, expert witnesses, or points of law; conduct labour market research on the Internet.
  • Understand all major concepts relating to court proceedings.
  • Identify and confirm limitation periods.
  • Understand finer details and nuances of law and procedures relating to court proceedings;
  • Contribute to discussions with lawyer concerning file strategy, theory and appropriate litigation plan.
  • Researching records, court files and other legal documents
  • Identify files ready for settlement discussions or appropriate to prepare for settlement conferences.
  • Discretion with confidential information
  • Assisting lawyers in preparation for mediation and judicial dispute resolutions. Research and organize evidence.
