For over 70 years, John Ross & Sons have been a leader in the international metal market and the largest scrap metal recycling facility in Atlantic Canada. We are looking for a skilled and experienced Health & Safety Advisor to join our dynamic and growing company.
Our Health & Safety Advisor is an integral leader in the workplace, responsible for developing, executing, and maintaining our Health & Safety program and ensuring compliance with these measures.
Working directly with our joint occupational health & safety committee, our safety advisor will establish, educate, and enforce all workplace safety requirements in compliance with Federal and Provincial standards to ensure overall workplace excellence.
Primary duties & responsibilities:
The Health & Safety Advisor is the advocator for all aspects of the overall health & safety of our employees; the duties & responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Administer the Health & Safety program on an ongoing basis.
- Review, design, update, and implement health & safety policies and procedures.
- Ensure contractors maintain up-to-date safety certifications & comply with all Federal & Provincial protocols & laws at all times while onsite or acting on behalf of John Ross & Sons Ltd.
- Inspect machinery and equipment to ensure safe operation.
- Provide health and safety reports and policy documentation (as required by the Nova Scotia Health and Safety Act and the organization)
- Providing oversite on incident and injury reports, including near misses.
- Conduct incident prevention and health and safety training and ensure that employee training is always up to date.
- Ongoing evaluation of practices and procedures to identify areas of risk exposure and areas for improvement.
- Injury and illness reporting (as per government and company protocols)
- Investigation of accidents and illnesses to identify the cause and establish preventative measures to avoid further incidents.
- Identify and assess all PPE needs and ensure that equipment is used properly and readily.
- Inspecting work site(s) for potential workplace hazards which could cause illness or injury.
- Organizing monthly safety meetings with management and safety committee members.
- Dealing with health and safety concerns or complaints promptly (and as required by the Nova Scotia Health and Safety Act) and notifying employees of the decision made in response to the concern/complaint.
Qualifications & skills:
- A detailed understanding of the Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Act is an asset.
- Completion of Occupational Health & Safety Professional Certificate (CRSP).
- Minimum of 5 years previous experience in a full-time Construction Safety role.
- Ability to provide direction to employees and sub-contractors.
- Current Occupational Health and Safety Certificate.
- Current WHMIS Training & Certification.
- Current First Aid & CPR Certification.
- Fall Protection, Fire watch, & Confined spaces certification.
- Clean Driving Record and Abstract.
- Clear Criminal Record Check and Abstract.
- Must possess excellent verbal, analytical, organizational, and written skills.
- Certification in risk management and health/safety management.
- Ability to travel and work outdoors in various weather conditions (hot and cold).
- Ability to adapt and operate effectively in new and challenging work environments.
- High-level of knowledge in workplace equipment (including heavy machinery).
- Outstanding observation skills and attention to detail.
- High-level understanding of data analysis and risk assessment.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and motivational skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Outlook, Teams, etc.)

Hours of Work:
- Monday to Friday: 7:00 am - 5:00 pm; on-call availability is an asset.
