The Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF) is the National Government of the Red River Métis - also known as the Manitoba Métis. The Red River Métis are Canada’s Negotiating Partners in Confederation and the Founders of the Province of Manitoba.
The MMF seeks to fill one full-time Junior Writer position within our Communications Department located at 150 Henry Ave in Winnipeg, MB. Under the direction of the Communications Director and support of the Head Writer, the Junior Writer will research, write, edit, fact-check, adapt and write articles for web content, newspapers, magazines, and other media outlets, as well as scripts for radio, while working within the Manitoba Métis Federation’s brand standards.
Job Duties/Competencies:
- Perform research on different topics to obtain factual information and authentic detail, utilizing sources such as newspaper accounts, diaries, interviews, the internet and other methods;
- Perform extensive fact-checking;
- Analyze and interpret findings by breaking down data;
- Uncover newsworthy stories that showcase Citizens, and MMF programs and initiatives;
- Conduct interviews in order to write outlines and rough drafts;
- Create written material including but not limited to scripts for radio/TV, web content, newspaper and magazine articles;
- Edit and proofread text correcting spelling and grammar.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in journalism/content development, creative writing, English literature, performing arts, communications or relevant field;
- Minimum two years’ experience writing/editing in a professional setting;
- Demonstrable portfolio of published articles;
- Ability to produce creative work and fact-check information;
- Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite;
- Knowledge of digital editing, web search and databases;
- Strong organizational, interpersonal and time management skills;
- Experience working for a not-for-profit organization and Indigenous community is an asset;
- Knowledge of Métis culture, MMF programs and services is a definite asset; and,
- Ability to travel, valid Manitoba Driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle.
