Position Summary:

Responsible for analyzing the public’s library needs and advising the public in their use of library resources at the Central Library or at a branch library. Also responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing library services and programs for adults, ages 18 and older. The weekly work schedule will include nights and weekends, with some changes to the regular schedule required to participate in programming and outreach services.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Guide and assist patrons in locating answers to their questions using a variety of available resources; perform reference interviews and readers’ advisory services.
  • Instruct and advise patrons in using the online catalog system and databases, understanding classification systems and reference material procedures, finding materials, and evaluating Internet and other available resources.
  • Resolve patron problems and modify library services consistent with established library policy.
  • Perform basic computer hardware and software troubleshooting.
  • Conduct instructional classes on technology, the Internet and the library’s online resources.
  • Assess patron needs; plan, develop, and present programs of popular interest to the public; evaluate programming and activities.
  • Promote the use of materials through displays, bibliographies, and related activities; work with the marketing team to publicize services.
  • Maintain data, conduct periodic surveys, and compile narrative and statistical reports on activities and functions within the library.
  • Participate in day-to-day library operations including, but not limited to, opening and closing routines and banking/cash handling procedures.
  • Participate as needed in the evaluation, selection, acquisition, retention, discarding, or special handling of library materials.
  • Supervise library operations in the absence of a Senior Librarian or Manager.
Minimum Education & Work Experience :  Master's Degree in Library Science, or within 6 months of earning an MLS degree, from an American Library Association accredited college or university  Up to 1 year related experience Preferred Knowledge - Abilities & Skills:
Education/ Experience:

One or more of the following are preferred qualifications for this position:
  • 1-3 years of recent professional public library experience
  • Experience with adult programming and public speaking in a public library setting
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of current principles and practices in public libraries, including public library operations, reference services, readers’ advisory, library materials selection, and library technology
  • Knowledge of online resources as well as general reference tools and services commonly provided to patrons by public libraries
  • Skill operating office equipment, computer equipment, and software programs, especially Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook, Access)
  • Skill utilizing current technology and social media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, etc.)
  • Ability to analyze library related problems and take appropriate action
  • Ability to work cooperatively and congenially with others, including other City employees and the public, individually and in a team
  • Ability to produce written documents with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar
  • Ability to handle customer issues and complaints appropriately
  • The ability to speak and read Spanish or Vietnamese is preferred, but not a requirement

Licenses & Certifications:  Valid Class C driver's license Physical Tasks & Working Conditions: The incumbent works in a typical library environment with low to moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and some exposure to dust and some minor physical labor required. Work assignments may be at any of the four library locations and may vary, depending on departmental needs, with travel between library and City facilities, as required. Reliable personal transportation will be needed. Work is performed throughout the library with standing in, and walking between, work areas. Must be able to reach materials at 90” height shelving with a stepstool or shelving at floor level, push/pull a loaded book cart, lift up to 30 pound bins infrequently, with the use of proper equipment, utilize keyboard and peripherals, and operate a telephone. Employees may interact with upset members of the public while interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
