Medical Billing Supervisor

Salary Range: $48,235.20 – $72,363.20

Job Summary: Under general direction of the Patient Accounts Manager, the Medical Billing Supervisor is responsible for supervising, coaching, training, and assisting with the professional development of Medical Billing Assistants in all aspects of verification and claims follow up. This position also works closely with the Patient Accounts Manager to configure, maintain, and make updates to the department’s billing software program. It requires the ability to problem solve errors as it relates to claims creation, billing and follow up.

Job Duties:
  • Prepare and submit medical claims to the claim’s clearinghouse. Follow up on submitted claims. Track trending problems concerning 837 formatting and research solutions to correct ongoing billing issues.
  • Direct and supervise Medical Billing Assistants. Plan, assign, direct, and monitor tasks within the department. Take corrective action to resolve employee concerns. Approve time off requests to ensure adequate coverage is in place.
  • Communicate with medical staff, external contacts, department staff, and other stakeholders to gather information necessary to correct accounts and claims. This requires critical thinking and good judgement.
  • Plan and develop on-going training for all staff. Assist the Patient Accounts Manager and Revenue Cycle Director with preparing monthly departmental staff meetings.
  • Research and confirm that all efforts to secure payment have been exhausted. Apply adjustments and write offs in accordance to department policy. Review and approve Medical Billing Assistant requests for adjustments and write offs.
  • Use reports to track data regarding rejected claims, follow up volume, write off statistics, and error corrections.
  • Support and assist the Patients Accounts Manager in maintaining the operations of the Accounts Receivable department.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Required:
  • Current resident of the state of Wisconsin
  • Associate degree or higher in Business Administration, Finance or in a closely related field is required
  • At least three (3) years of work experience in medical billing and follow up or in a closely related field is required
  • At least three (3) years of staff supervision
  • Basic knowledge of insurance portals
  • Intermediate knowledge of all related computer and software applications, such as word processing and spreadsheets.
  • Intermediate knowledge of 837, 835, and 999 reports
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Three years of supervising medical billing staff is preferred
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Skilled in the use of PC’s, copy and fax machines, calculator, telephones, scanners, and printers; knowledge of the principles and practices of the medical billing field; excellent oral and written communication skills; skill interpreting and administering plan documents; ability to work independently; ability to work effectively and harmoniously with peers, clients, and other departments; ability to maintain sensitive or confidential information. Able to lift/carry up to 15lbs as needed.
