Duties

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Functions as a primary assistive person responsible for handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during all endoscopy procedures including but not limited to: esophagoscopy, colonoscopy, endoscopy, and bronchoscopy procedures with biopsy or dilatation.
  • Assists patients to prepare to have a procedure performed, such as changing clothes, provide basic information regarding the procedure, etc.
  • Has an extensive knowledge of a wide variety of complex endoscopy procedures and possible complications. Is able to anticipate and prepare for the needs of the endoscopy team. Is able to report observations and immediate procedural needs to the Practitioner or RN. Has an in-depth technical knowledge concerning instrumentation, human anatomy, human physiology, infection control and has technical knowledge on use and effects of anesthesia/sedation care.
  • Able to position patients prior, during, and after the procedure. This also involves appropriate cushioning to joints and individual patient needs.
  • Sets up the endoscopy field with all required items for all procedures, such as fiber optic equipment, endoscopic equipment, bronchoscopy equipment and other supplies and equipment.
  • Able to manually pre-clean endoscopes, pre-clean bronchoscope and prepare for pickup by Sterile Processing Services (SPS).
  • Maintains the system process for identification of expired scopes and other sterile equipment/ supplies.
  • Identifies if scope is damaged and what to do to prevent further damage before the scope is sent for repair. Maintains scope inventory and repair log.
  • Communicates effectively with all endoscopy team members.
  • Plans and discusses each procedure with endoscopy professionals and assures that all supplies and equipment are available prior to the procedure.
  • Assists Nurse Manager in maintaining appropriate PAR levels for all supplies. Completes manual and electronic order requisitions. Receives shipments, performs inventories as assigned.
  • Prepares, organizes, and maintains procedural setups.
  • Observes and responds promptly to each stage of the procedure and anticipates the needs of the Practitioner by maintaining a high level of concentration for extended periods of time.
  • Assists with the collection, labeling, and recording of specimens.
  • Provides safe transportation of patients.
  • Aids in the administrative function of the unit, which includes clerical support such as receiving telephone calls and visitors, maintaining office files, gather and compile statistics, quality assurance data, and organize and maintain internal records of the Endoscopy (GI) and Bronchoscopy Lab.
  • Ensures proper performance of equipment, set up equipment, and prepares endoscopic reusable medical equipment (RME) for reprocessing.



Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm or 7:30 am - 4:00 pm, based on needs of service

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency: Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d)

Grade Determinations: Medical Instrument Technician (GI)
For GS-7: Applicants applying under this announcement must possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 level, Medical Instrument Technician (GI). They are proficient with GI endoscopic equipment and ensure proper performance of endoscopic equipment; select alternate equipment or adjust equipment settings to accommodate patient needs and produce high quality technique. They collect, process, and label all specimens; train other technicians in basic endoscopic procedures; work in and outside the GI unit offering technician support during emergent and on-call endoscopic cases; and assist the nurse in patient care duties such as obtaining vital signs, dressing and documenting all pertinent information in the patient's records. They inventory and maintain par levels of specialty equipment for the endoscopy unit.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following:
1. Knowledge of endoscopic equipment and use in basic and complex endoscopic procedures.
2. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology related to the GI system, with ability to recognize and report obvious abnormalities during procedures.
3. Ability to assist physician with specialized, complex procedures.
4. Knowledge of universal precautions and disinfection techniques and ability to follow SOP's to clean reusable medical equipment (RME).
5. Ability to collaborate, communicate, and demonstrate customer service skills and interpersonal skills with all healthcare professionals to ensure quality and continuity of care.
6. Ability to use basic computer systems and programs to record patient and endoscopic data, adhering to patient privacy and information security policies.
7. Ability to deliver patient care, including vital sign measurements and medication administration.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-7.

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, lifting more than 10 pounds, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The MIT may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures.
