Harlem Hospital Center has been a bedrock of the Harlem community since 1887. The hospital provides a wide range of medical, surgical, diagnostic, therapeutic and family support services to the residents of Central Harlem, West Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood. This position is an integral part of the health care setting service and the incumbent receives assignments from the appropriate employee in charge of patient and messenger escort, in accordance with the operational procedures determined by health care setting leadership. Transports patients to and from the Nursing Service and all other patient areas for specialized treatment and examinations as a primary function, but will also perform such other duties as required.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Reports all problems/potential (job related) to immediate supervisor.
• Escorts newly admitted patients to designated areas in the hospital complex and assists them in storing their luggage, packages, clothing and other items.
• Receives discharge patient in wheelchair on unit and transports patient to designated discharge area.
• Escorts/transports mother and infant when discharged safely to assigned discharge area.
• Transports body to morgue and assists morgue attendant in placing body in morgue storage. Cleans stretcher and returns to unit.
• Prepares and assembles equipment (stretchers and wheelchairs) in designated area.
• Responsible for the ready availability, upkeep and cleanliness of wheelchairs, stretchers and stretcher beds.
• Returns equipment to designated areas at end of tour.
• Transports patients to and from psychiatry with hospital police as per policy.
• Transports medically unstable patients accompanied by nursing/medical personnel.

Elementary school graduation or equivalent ability to effectively communicate with patients; Ability to keep simple clinical records.
