Main function:
The OR RN manages the individualized, goal- directed care through process and principles of primary nursing in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. This position is responsible for the delivery of quality care in the Operating Room and other areas of Surgical Services meeting standards set forth by the state, AAAHC and facility policies and procedures. This position must maintain knowledge and skills required to preforms as a professional Registered Perioperative Nurse. This RN must promote teamwork with all surgical team members and other departments. The RN manages supplies and equipment efficiently and effectively. The position works under the general supervision of the OR manager and OR Charge RN.

- Develops, interprets and recommends implementation of policies, procedures, regulations,
- programs and recommended practices to ensure requirements are met
- Performs the perioperative nursing role to include preoperative assessment of the patient, nursing care plan formulation, operative care plan implementation, and postoperative evaluation of the patient’s response/outcome. Also evaluates the effectiveness and appropriateness of nursing care provided with documentation of such.
- Demonstrates understanding and utilization of principles of asepsis in all duties.
- Assists in the setting up and performance of cases by assembly of equipment and supplies according to sterile technique.
- Assists in the setting up and performance of cases by opening of sterile pack, instruments, and supplies according to sterile technique.
- Prepares each patient for surgery by positioning the patient in appropriate position, preparing the patient’s operative site, confirming the procedure and site according to the surgeon’s history and physical and operating room team, and assist in moving the patient to and from operating room table
- Assists anesthesia personnel with the intubation and extubation of patients, the monitoring of fluid volume balance and thermoregulation of the patient
- Performs surgical counts (sponges, sharps, and instruments) and documents nursing care on legal records according to policy and procedure.
- Assists in the clean-up of operating room following surgery, including proper disposal of used sharps and supplies.
- Handles specimens according to proper technique
- Assumes responsibility for intra-operative patient safety related to positioning activities, the use of equipment, and the use of chemicals and solutions.
- Is responsible for complete and thorough performance of assigned tasks, addressing specific needs of pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients as necessary
- Acts as the nursing advocate for the patient, upholding the patient’s rights. Collaborates with other professional team members.
- Demonstrates proper procedure for medication administration and labeling medication and fluids to the sterile field.
- Uses supplies conservatively and efficiently.
- Performs infection control activities to include observation of the surgical team during procedures and takes corrective action as needed to maintain aseptic technique. Provides a surgically clean environment for patient care. Ensures the sterility of supplies and instrumentation used during operative procedures.
- Performs charges correctly.
- Stocks supplies in room per par levels, always rotating sterile supplies and checking expiration dates.
- Knowledgeable regarding AIASC policy and procedure
- Maintains competency through appropriate continuing education.
- Performs other related duties incidental to the work described above or assigned.
- Makes notes to change physician preference cards and communicates changes to the appropriate coordinator.
- Assists in cross-training clinical staff to create a productive work environment for all clinical areas
- Participates in designated committees
- Analyzes clinical documentation to ensure facility’s policies/procedures are followed
- Serves as a liaison among patients, families, nursing, and medical staff to coordinate quality patient care
- Check and respond to emails in a timely and efficient manner
- Promotes professional, harmonious relations and favorable attitudes among the healthcare team
- Applies material management principles to establish procedures for use
- Promotes cost-effectiveness and implements procedures to control waste
- Monitors the care and cleaning of equipment to maintain proper working condition
- Assists manager in identifying and evaluating need for items relative to trends and physician requests
- Reviews inventory for availability of supplies and equipment necessary to meet patient needs
- Oversees inventory, maintaining adequate supplies and equipment and providing for their economical use
- Cooperative work attitude toward co-employees, management, patients, visitors, and physicians
- Ability to promote favorable facility image with physicians, patients, insurance companies, and general public
- Ability to make decisions and solve problems
- High school diploma or GED certificate; Associate Degree of Nursing required, BS or BA degree preferred
- RN with active license in appropriate state
- ACLS and CPR certification CNOR certification preferred
- Strong ethical and moral character references
- Language skills adequate for high-level written, interpersonal, and telephone communication in American English
