Park Ranger Technician
Job description
Will include Monday – Sunday: days, evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays
The candidate selected for this critical position will be responsible for park, retail, and concession operations at Elizabeth River Park, Western Branch Park, Northwest River Park and/or other city parks; along with, performing technical park management, programming and resource conservation work. Additionally, this position will assist with general park operations, events, activities, maintenance, cleaning, and programs. Duties include but are not limited to:
Provides customer service that meets the expectations of the City’s Customer Service Initiative. Interacts with the public in person, by telephone, and electronically, while following set customer service standards. Answers telephone, assists visitors; and provides public with information concerning park operations, program policies, recreational facilities and resources.
Operates cash register; sells retail merchandise, food products, memberships; processes transactions for recreational programing, rentals, and reservations. Handles check, credit and cash transactions. Performs daily close out procedures and balances cash drawer. Submits reports related to sales, cash handling and inventory to Supervisor.
May prepare and sell food items in the concessions area; cleans and sanitizes food service and equipment, in compliance with all Public Health and Food Safety Regulations.
Stocks shelves and orders supplies; checks inventory, reports inventory and product loss to supervisor.
Assists Park Rangers with visitor management and enforcement of park rules and regulations; monitors and assists with departmental special events, programs and activities; patrols parks, boat ramp, campgrounds, shelters, piers, playgrounds, lakes and surrounding City properties; ensures safe and proper use of facilities, resources and equipment.
May serve as attendant for the City Park Skate Park. Monitors memberships, enforces rules and regulation. May assist with city special events and activities.
Reports on incidents and accidents that occur on park grounds, submits written reports to Supervisor.
Assists with the development of and design of exhibits, pamphlets, flyers, and brochures advertising park programs, interpreting park resources, and explaining park and recreational facility operations.
Cleans and maintains park and park amenities, recreational facilities, restrooms, concessions and related equipment daily, and as needed. Picks up and disposes of trash and debris.
Reserves picnic areas, campgrounds, recreation facilities, and picnic shelters; maintains waiting list, using specialized software and notifies when an opening becomes available.
Assists with park and city events as well as interpretive walks, camps, clinics, educational programs, talks and other programs relating to park resources, natural history, fish and game, and conservation efforts; assists in the care and rehabilitation of injured park wildlife.
Department of Health, food handling permit may be required.
Performs other related work as assigned.
Requires a high school diploma or GED. College-level education in a related field such as park management, wildlife management, natural sciences, forestry, business, or leisure services is preferred.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT :
Requires a minimum of one year of experience in a park or interpretive visitor center or closely related setting.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES :
Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with the City Driving Standards.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
Previous food service and cash handling experience. Food Handlers permit.
Basic computer skills.
Customer service skills.
