Position Summary
The role of the Patient Account Representative reports to the Office Manager. This position must be knowledgeable of various insurance regulations and requirements, including Federal and State guidelines. This position serves as the back-up for the surgery registration clerks, admitting clerks and cashier positions. Travel of less than 15 miles is required once a week and will require proof of vehicle insurance. This position spends the majority of time sitting (up to 80% of work time) with frequent walking of short distances (up to 20% of work time) as well as lifting and walking up/down stairs.

Responsibilities

• Responds to incoming inquiries using a variety of methods, including answering phones
• Records patient messages and documentation
• Reviews all inpatient and observation accounts ensuring accuracy and completeness of demographics and billing information
• Prepares accounts for billing and processes payments
• Contacts insurance companies to verify insurance eligibility and benefits
• Uses resources provided by company, including online resources, to verify insurance eligibility and benefits
• Pre-registers all patients scheduled for inpatient or outpatient services and establishes appropriate payment arrangements with patient or guarantor
• Provides self-payment quotes
• Performs collection responsibilities, including collection of co-pays and past balances
• Reviews medical necessity for all outpatient Medicare pre-registrations
• Medicaid eligibility and PCP referrals
• Provides and obtains VA authorizations and secondary authorization requests
• Scans and maintains records
• Processes and sorts electronic faxes
• Places patients in appropriate exam rooms
• Completes screening on employees, patients, and visitors for illness related symptoms upon entry into the facility
• Assists with cleaning and daily maintenance of patient areas
• Other duties as assigned by leadership
