Position Highlights
The McNew Lab at the University of Arizona seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to conduct research on genomic evolution in birds in response to emerging disease.

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work under the supervision of Dr. Sabrina McNew in the department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Responsibilities will include: 1) preparation of samples for next-generation sequencing, 2) bioinformatics analysis, 3) manuscript preparation and presentation, 4) mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. Optional activities include field work in the Galapagos Islands.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Biology or a related field and will be capable of leading an innovative research program, working collaboratively with an international team, and communicating effectively to academic and non-academic audiences. The researcher will additionally have opportunities to develop new and independent research avenues, build skills for academic and non-academic career paths, and receive mentorship in a community that values diversity, equity, and inclusion. This position is a one year appointment, with the possibility for additional years depending on performance and funding.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Conduct high-quality research on the ecology and evolution of host-parasite interactions.
  • Work semi-independently, showing initiative and the capacity to move forward large research projects.
  • Contribute to a positive lab environment, including mentoring of students and participating in the departmental community.
  • Participate in the growth and maintenance of a research lab.
  • Write manuscripts for publication and contribute to grant proposals.
  • Present research at scientific conferences.

Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD in Biology or related field by the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with genomic data, birds, and/or parasites.
  • Experience working in Latin America.
  • Academic publication records.
