ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Pitzer student garden responsibilities over the summer: will include but are not limited to oversight of the newly installed irrigation systems in the main garden area, the orchard, and the raised beds. Routine replacement and patching of leaks is vital to ensure that significant water loss does not occur and that plants are consistently watered during the driest months of the season. Additionally, a process for distributing summer produce will need to be put in place involving food storage such as canning or preserving in partnership with the grove house. This is an opportunity to strengthen community partnerships that could serve as additional sites for agroecology learning. Chickens and (vermi)compost upkeep accounts for another portion of the necessary summer maintenance. Routine daily egg collection ensures that the chickens don’t eat their own eggs and that food and water is consistently accessible to them. Presently, three different composting systems are in the works including: a self-contained aerobin unit, a vermicompost, and a small open-air pile. Maintaining the necessary Ph and moisture levels of these systems will allow the garden to continue striving towards a regenerative closed-loop system that replenishes its own soil.
  • Outback care: and maintenance responsibilities will include but are not limited to: weeding invasive plants, monitoring plant health, and caring for newly planted starts so they can survive the harsh summer and develop into self-sufficient plants. The role may involve maintenance of temporary surface irrigation in the outback.
  • General Campus agroecology roles: students participating in the summer positions will be encouraged to take part in planning committees related to campus tree canopy replacement and Pother matters involving possibilities to plant more trees, native plants, or food plants on campus.
  • Food Recovery Network campus food security: students working over the summer months would provide staffing support for food recovery work to receive and stock donations of food for the Pitzer student and staff fridge in the Grove House. Students would also coordinate conveyance of crops grown in the garden in the summer to the Grove House fridge and work on preserving and canning produce for use in the fall semester.
Basic Qualification: Must be a Graduate from one of the 5C’s with GPA 3.0 or above. Must have gardening and farming experience and must have been a Pitzer student garden club member for at least one year or have been one of the student garden student employees for at least one semester.
Preferred Qualifications: Bilingual Spanish/English. Experience planting, cultivating, harvesting, and packaging produce. Experience planning gardens and developing organic pest management.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
The individual must possess knowledge, skills and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  • Must have access to a dedicated and suitable workstation at remote location, including desk or table and supporting, upright chair. Must ensure workstation is safe and free from hazards.
