The Primary Care Physician is responsible for providing comprehensive ambulatory primary medical care services in collaboration with other health care professionals. They also provide medical back-up and delegated prescriptive authority to agency employed mid-level providers. The Primary Care Physician participates as a teaching Preceptor, as appropriate for professionals in training who conduct their educational clinic rotations in NMHSI facilities.

Major Responsibilities

  • Render ambulatory primary medical care services in Northwest Michigan Health Services, Inc. (NMHSI) Clinic site(s). Occasional off-site service delivery may also be required as an extension of some clinic sites
  • Provide NMHSI with updated copies of Professional license renewals as they occur and Continuing Medical Education credits as they are received
  • Provide medical back-up and delegated prescriptive authority to mid-level agency providers
  • Ensure availability for phone consultations with professional staff, as necessary, during times while away from the clinic setting.
  • Offer advice regarding needed revisions in clinic protocols or the development of new protocols
  • Provide critical and constructive feedback to the Chief Operations Officer and Quality Assurance regarding clinical matters and operational improvements
  • Participate in clinical provider collaborative practice meetings
  • Attend clinic staff meetings as necessary
  • Participate in monthly Quality Management Meetings as necessary
  • Act as an advocate on behalf of populations with special needs in the community, especially in interactions with other health care providers
  • Incorporate cultural competence and responsiveness into practice, recognizing that cultural beliefs impact health care utilization
  • Provide complete and timely documentation for all client encounters
  • Serve as preceptor for Nurse Practitioner/ PA, medical students and/or supervisor for physician residents if placements occur within the assigned clinic settings
  • Foster implementations of the agency’s Health Care Plan.

Professional Qualifications

  • Must be licensed as a physician in the State of Michigan
  • Must hold a Michigan Board of Pharmacy Controlled Substance License
  • Must have a Controlled Substance Registration Certificate from the U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration
  • Board Certification in a primary care field preferred
  • Bilingual in Spanish / English preferred
