SALARY: Biologist I: $23.30 - 27.02 DOE Biologist II: $26.50 - 30.72 DOE
REPORTS TO: Principle Biologist
LOCATION: Nespelem, WA
Basic Functions: Under the supervision of the Wildlife Mitigation Senior Biologist, this position will help organize and conduct vegetation management activities on 62,000 acres of Wildlife Mitigation lands on the Colville Reservation. The position will supervise and lead two (2) Wildlife Technician Crews (3 Wildlife Technicians each) on vegetation management activities that adhere to and follow the required safety precautions. Position requires extensive field work in all weather and terrain conditions. Wildlife Biologist I: First level in a professional career path for management of wildlife and wildlife habitats. Requires a Bachelor of Science Degree and a WSDA Public Operator Pesticide License with three endorsements. Wildlife Biologist II: Second level in a professional career path for management of wildlife and wildlife habitats. Requires 36 months at the Biologist I level (or a Master’s Degree and 12 months at the Biologist I level or equivalent), expanded knowledge of and demonstrated experience implementing field and laboratory methods, report results, research literature prepared by others to organize reports, and the ability to independently work with other agencies and private landowners.
Education and Training:
Wildlife Biologist I:
- A Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited college or university in wildlife, natural resources science, or environmental science.
Wildlife Biologist II:
- Wildlife Biologist I requirements and 36 months experience at the Biologist I or equivalent level related to wildlife management, conservation, and/or research;
OR
- A Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the applicable science AND 12 months experience at the Biologist I or equivalent level related to wildlife management, conservation, and/or research.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- The application of wildlife management policies and procedures; native plant and animal identification and associated habitats; key noxious weed species identification and ecology; how to design and implement general habitat and/or plant community surveys; use GPS receivers and GIS software for the management of natural resources; effective maintenance of accurate records of all data to prepare reports; the use of computers and associated software; various methods and protocols for invasive species control management including chemical applications consistent with occupational hazards and safety precautions (TOSHA); field calibration techniques; appropriate herbicide use; the safe operation of ATVs, trucks, tractors, snowmobiles, chainsaws, power tools, etc.; how to develop and read maps, GPS instruments, aerial photos, and conduct self-orientation in the field utilizing various instruments and reference resources.
- Aid in the designing and conduct field surveys and inventories of wildlife populations and their habitat; collect scientific data and keep accurate records; identify invasive species within the region and utilize effective control measures to contain, prevent the spread, or eradicate invasive species; plan and implement daily, weekly, and/or monthly work schedules; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and maintain clear and concise records of all chemical applications and equipment/supplies used to perform job functions; safely handle, mix and apply pesticide chemicals as needed per application; maintain equipment required to apply management treatments; pass a first aid course and maintain qualification; identify environmental conditions that may create problems during implementation of invasive species control measures; work safely under various weather and terrain conditions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, clients, outside agencies, other Tribes, and the general public; provide educational and technical expertise to land managers, Tribal members, landowners, and others on invasive species matters.
- In addition, employee must have the ability to effectively work with and/or supervise other employees, must be in good physical condition with the ability to pack heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.) over rough terrain and possibly in inclement weather conditions, and must be able to work in a multi-cultural environment.
- Must be able to work effectively in all weather conditions and in rough terrain.
- Must be able to repetitively lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to complete repetitive tasks, such as spraying invasive species.
- Must be able to sit or stand for considerable periods of time (hours).
Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.

If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance. In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances. If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
