The Geospace Environment Impacts and Applications Branch is seeking a Section Chief. The Ionospheric Impacts section consists of ~10 civilians, 17 in-house contractors, and 2 military. This position is expected to be a 100%-time commitment. The RVBXC Section Chief develops, plans, leads, and carries out basic and applied research investigations in ionospheric radio science, global ionospheric physics and dynamics, and space environment impacts to military systems and services. Duties will include tracking various DoD applications to include the development of hardware and software solutions to specify and predict the aerospace environment and the hazards and impacts posed by that environment to the operation and lifetime of DoD space and ground assets and explore ways to utilize the Geospace environment for military advantage.
Position duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Leading a team of scientists and engineers working on diverse product portfolio in the Space Environment.
  • Provides day-to-day execution of the section and programmatic duties for the organization.
  • Directs other scientists, engineers, and technicians in the development of experimental techniques, laboratory hardware, and model software.
  • Trains, mentors, and equips civilian and military researchers to execute ionospheric research and to implement branch science and technology development plans.
  • Helps with recruiting, training, mentoring, & maintaining an R&D team including planning and resource allocation.
  • Supervises a team of researchers, civilian and military, and works with branch management to properly staff research efforts. Supervises and manages personnel and activities of the Ionospheric Impacts Section.
  • Communicates research results in scientific journals and by presentations at scientific/technical conferences and USAF/DoD briefings and meetings. Seeks, advocates, and secures support for these efforts from customers.
  • Enhances military understanding of the space environment with optical, radio, and satellite in-situ and remote sensing data and coordinates results with international cooperative studies of the ionosphere.
  • Ensuring section members are properly trained, staffed, and equipped by coordinating formal training, mentoring, and enabling the execution of branch technical teams and sections.
  • Solves challenging technical and personnel issues as they arise.
  • Prepares, edits, and tracks military performance reports, decorations, and feedbacks.
  • Recognizes branch individuals through quarterly award packages, and other avenues of recognition. As well as assisting with writing military performance reports.
  • Assists with approving timecards, travel, and leave requests as needed.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • US Citizenship
  • Must be a DR/DO-02/03/04 or O-3 to O-5 officer employed within AFRL at Kirtland AFB (Phillips Research Site)
  • Must possess a professional science or engineering (S&E) degree from an accredited academic institution
  • Experience working with or within the Department of Defense research community.
  • This position is an Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) position requiring Level II (Practitioner) Non-Critical certification in Engineering and Technology Management (ETM). The selectee will have 24-months to meet APDP requirements or a waiver must be obtained. 80 hours of qualified continuous learning will be required every two years. Applicants for this position must list any acquisition certifications and status as an acquisition corps member in their resume.
  • Applicants must currently hold, or have the ability to obtain a DOD TS/SCI clearance
