Job Description:
Under the general supervision of the Vice President-Accreditation and Licensure, manages the day-to-day activities of the Clinical Risk Management function of the Accreditation and Licensure Department. In conjunction with the WellSpan Legal Department and with a dotted line to the Director-Risk Management, develops, plans, directs, and implements the System risk management council. Establishes processes to ensure compliance with legal, quality and safety standards. Supports WellSpan Health’s objective of enhancing and promoting patient safety and quality of care.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Plans and implements clinical risk management programs to meet System needs.
- Provides or coordinates the provision of clinical education and advice to System employees and affiliated providers to ensure compliance with legal, quality and safety standards and to prevent or minimize clinical risk.
- Coordinates the WellSpan System Risk Management Council.
- Manages clinical risk identification and reporting systems. Reviews and analyzes data.
- Reviews medical records and other clinical information with general familiarity with medical terms and conditions.
- Collaborates with other System departments, including, but not limited to, Patient Safety, Quality, Medical Staff Services, Accreditation and Licensure, and Legal to identify and mitigate clinical risk.
- Provides consultations regarding matters pertaining to clinical risk management, including researching and advising relative to best practices and participates in the on-call schedule rotation for WellSpan Accreditation/Clinical Risk Management.
- Stewards principles of risk-based thinking and ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems.
- Reviews and analyzes safety event/customer service reports for Clinical Risk Management, quality of care, and regulatory concerns.
- Identifies and reports on organizational clinical risk through trend analysis of incidents, grievances, peer review reports, etc.
- Acts as a resource person by presenting relevant clinical risk management issues for discussion and evaluation.
- Understands applicable regulatory requirements related to clinical risk management and keeps updated on any changes or revisions to such requirements.
- Upon request and at specified intervals, conducts, coordinates, and/or assists with risk assessments such as Proactive Risk Assessments and Failure Mode and Effects Analyses.
- Participates on committees directed toward promoting quality of care and with availability to attend/cover other committee meetings as appropriate.
- Assists in developing educational programs to raise staff awareness to clinical risk exposure.

- Minimum Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Min Field of Expertise
- 5 years experience in healthcare or medicolegal setting; clinical background a plus
- Required Certification:
- Risk Management (CPHRM) certification within three years of hire
- Perf Cert/Registration: Clinical registration/licensure (RN, MLS, RRT, etc.) or paralegal
