The Work You Will Do:
This is an entry level position. Employees may perform or be responsible for the completion of a range of assignments independently under limited supervision. The work requires applying a scientific understanding to analyze problems of a specialized nature in a wide range of applications.

Where You Will Work:
South District - The South District Office is located in Fort Myers. Fort Myers is popular for its great beaches that line the Gulf Coast, shopping and fishing. Attractions include the historic Henry Ford and Thomas Edison estates, downtown Fort Myers, with its many restaurants and nightlife, as well as nearby Naples and the islands of Captiva and Sanibel. It is a sports enthusiast haven as the Spring Training home of the Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins. The South District covers 8 counties (Lee, Collier, Charlotte, DeSoto, Sarasota, Hendry, Glades and Highlands).

Pay:

Your Specific Responsibilities:
Primary Duties related to the administration of the permitting and/or compliance and enforcement activities within NPDES Stormwater Program, Solid Waste and Grease Program.
- Conducts inspections at assigned facilities, as defined by the specific program, pursuant applicable Florida Statutes and Florida Administrative Code.
- Writes reports on outcome to inspections as required.
- Reviews and makes recommendations on reports, scientific, technical or legal documents.
- Provides technical assistance as needed.
- Keeps databases updated as required for assigned facilities.
- Recommends enforcement actions as appropriate. Drafts basic enforcement documents.
- Provides outreach/compliance assistance to small or basic facilities as needed.
- Attends and participates in cross-training activities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Work Product
Ensure work products (file reviews, inspections, site visits, field work, reports, documents, etc.) are accurate, completed timely and entered into the designated database. Reports are to be processed in accordance with established program rules, requirements, and policies.

Customer Service
Identify and meet the needs of customers in order to provide excellent customer service. Communicates proactively in a clear consistent manner. The incumbent is expected to be helpful, cooperative, polite, respectful, and concerned at all times in their interactions with customers when representing the Department.
Outreach, Efficiencies, and Cost Savings
Support, participate, and assist in external outreach events (compliance assistance workshops) assists facility to reduce regulatory burden and enhance relationships with the Department’s stakeholders or general public. Identify potential areas to improve procedures and offer solutions to improve workplace efficiencies.
Training and Safety
Participate and assist with internal training events/activities to gain the essential skills needed to perform job duties. Consistently follow safety protocols and notify management of any potential safety hazards. This includes participating in safety events, job shadowing, on the job training, and team building initiatives as directed by management. Self-advocate for training and partner with appropriate district staff to learn about multiple DEP program areas.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the terminology, principles and analytical techniques of the physical or natural sciences.
- Ability to collect, evaluate, analyze and interpret scientific or technical data.
- Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to environmental programs.
- Ability to understand the mechanical components and operations associated with a regulated facility.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
- Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
- Ability to work in a team or independently.
- Ability to prepare technical and programmatic reports.
- Ability to understand and follow legislative policy direction as established in Florida Statutes.

- Ability to perform field inspections including; climb ladders and stairs, walk on slopes, lift and carry 40 pounds over a distance of up to 100 yards.
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods of time in temperatures and weather conditions typical of South Florida.
- Skilled in the use of personal computers, computer programs, spreadsheets, industry database applications and various electronic devices.
- Ability to maintain a valid driver’s license and travel overnight when required.
- Ability to conduct and complete work assignments without close supervision.
- Ability to use safety equipment, work in various levels of personal protection equipment (PPE) up to and including Level B, and complete a 40-hour HAZWOPER course
- Ability to be on-call and work flexible, unscheduled hours
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of state regulations pertaining to the NPDES Stormwater Program, the Solid Waste Program and the Grease Program areas.
- Possess at least one year of professional experience in environmental protection and regulation.
- Skilled at performing field inspections.
- Multilingual in English and Spanish, Creole or German.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid Florida Driver’s License
- A Bachelor’s or higher degree from an accredited college or university with a major in a natural science (i.e. biology, chemistry, environmental science) or engineering.
- Complete initial OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER and OSHA 8-hour HAZWOPER refresher annually thereafter.
- Ability to travel
Working hours: (A) Daily from Monday to Friday - 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (B) Total hours in workweek 40 (C) FLEX Schedule. This position is on-site.
