Job Description
Our Development & Permits department is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Zoning Plans Examiner I.
The successful candidate for this position will be able to do the following:
  • Gain an understanding of permit types, Codes and regulations related to permit processing for residential and commercial buildings and structures.

  • Gain the ability to navigate City systems such as the Accela system, Mainframe, Outlook, GIS and other related applications.

  • Develop the ability to review Site Plans for compliance with the Chesapeake Zoning Ordinance related to all types of projects/permits.

  • Have the ability to provide professional review comments and discuss reviews with a wide range of applicants from Architects, Engineers, Tenants and Property Owners in both verbal and written forms.

  • Display good customer service and both written and verbal communication skills and the ability to foster a cohesive team environment.

  • Be capable of managing multiple tasks and projects in an organized and highly efficient manner.

  • Gain an understanding or Proffers, both physical and cash, Use Permits, Re-zonings and how they relate to permit processing.


Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, architecture, or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT : In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two years of full-time equivalent experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards. Special skills or equipment certification will be required such as State Plans Examiner, Building Inspector, Fire Protection Plans Reviewer, and others.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS : Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications
Certified Virginia Zoning Official is preferred. Any experience with a zoning ordinance, review of site plans or related experience is also preferred.
