The main job responsibilities:
1. Handler Course Instruction. K9s trained by Tarheel Canine consist of both single (detection) and dual purpose (apprehension, tracking, detection) that are paired with new handlers. Both Classroom (Detection Science, Detection Deployments, Patrol Tactics, Tactical Tracking, K9 First Aid, K9 Case Law, among others) as well as daily practical instruction on handling, tactics, and deployment of Police K9s for Civilian LE are the main responsibilities of this position. Handler courses run M-F (8 Hours/day), months out of the year and are conducted on the following months: January, March, May, June, July, September, October, and November).
2. Training Canines. TK9 trainers are required as needed to perform training to assist the mission of providing civilian LE and military K9 Units with highly trained and competent K9 partners.
3. Teaching Students. Students at Tarheel Canine’s School for Dog Trainers consist of civilians, LE Unit trainers, and military trainers/handlers, and TK9 trainers are required to assist the staff with instruction of students in lecture and practical exercises as needed.
4. *Recertification/Training: On off handler course months recertification is conducted on the 3rd week of each of these months except December (Monday-Thursday). The rest of these months are devoted to assisting the other training cadres in daily training responsibilities, training students, and conducting lectures. Some recertification is conducted at agency locations and travel to conduct these certifications will be required on an as needed basis.
5. Leveraging Special Skills to expand business opportunities for Tarheel Canine Training in both civilian LE and Military applications.
6. Explosives/Narcotics Storage & Inventories. Conduct inventories and maintain narcotics and explosives storage under DEA and ATF licenses.
7. Human Capital. Trainers are expected to train and maintain personal dogs for sport/K9 Demo purposes, and attend seminars/conferences to keep up to date in their training. Company reimbursement for seminars is available for at least one approved seminar per year.
Seminar Instruction. Tarheel Canine conducts seminars/workshops around the globe and senior trainers will occasionally assist in travelling to Military Kennels in the US and Abroad, as well a police agencies in the US to deliver training seminars.
