Position Focus:

The Systems Engineer, 2 will participate in the design, development, support, and maintenance of the organization's systems infrastructure, including the implementation and design of hardware and software. Reviews previous documents and prepares up-to-date documents/modes/reports to meet consumer requests. Performs end-user support.

Job Responsibilities: Assist with the build, configuration, and documentation of IT infrastructure. Maintain and support IT infrastructure, ensuring adherence to standards and service level objectives. Monitor and troubleshoot IT infrastructure. Analyze and report on performance metrics. Implement and support robust and secure IT solutions. Serve as a technical liaison; support & collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
Contribute to development & implementation of best practices. Learn to use Infrastructure as code (IaaC) to provision accounts and deploy resources in cloud environments. Assist in managing cloud access using IAM/SSO. Assist in managing hybrid networking (on-prem and different cloud platforms). Ensure security integration into all cloud architecture solutions. Intake and provide level 1 consultation with researchers, faculty, and staff to understand their needs and assist with implementation of basic cloud solutions. Assist with maintaining cloud Linux, Windows and container-based systems.
Develop understanding of Cloud Computing technologies and architectural best practices. Develop grasp of networking, security, and system administration concepts.

WORK LOCATION: Hybrid - onsite and remote

Essential Duties

1. Provides technical expertise in resolving user system deficiencies and determines appropriate action. 2. Provides system services and analyze system performance for stakeholders and intended end users. Performs all activities necessary to activate a new operating system or new release of an existing system, including analysis, design, implementation, and related documentation. Analyzes systems performance and modifies programs to increase the efficiency of the operation. Reinstates integrity of system as quickly as possible following an outage in order to minimize item and data loss. 3. Recommends and authorizes system upgrades and software installations. 4. Designs, develops and implements new system tools. 5. Analyzes execution time of commonly used instruction to identify and replaces those that are inefficient or slow to operation. 6. Analyzes, evaluates and takes steps to circumvent problems and restores systems to operating condition. 7. Contributes in the determination of specifications and determines the combination of options needed to tailor an operating system to meet the business needs. 8. Conducts training and user education. 9. Researches new technologies, processes, and methodologies. 10. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in a related field and a minimum of two years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

General understanding of computer architecture, operating systems, Linux administration, and data structures.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Proven experience with scripting and infrastructure as code (i.e.; Terraform, Bash, Python, Powershell, Git).

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Proven knowledge of cloud technologies and cloud infrastructure, including networking and firewalls.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Basic understanding of cloud computing design and security principles.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Flexibility and willingness to learn new toolsets and solutions.
